We have more than three centuries of tradition in Mallappally. Our forefather came to this land in 1710.( 885 Malayalam era) He came here in a small canoe through Manimala river. His wife and two sons were with him.Why did he come to this place?
There’s historical evidence about four major Bhramin families, viz: Kalli,Kalikavu,Sankara Puri and Pakalomattom, selected after the time of St Thomas Apostle for priestly duties. Our ancestral family was Pakalomattom.
About Our Forefather
Our forefather Varghese came here with the support and blessings of Changanaserry palace. His sons Ithaak and Ittyavirah was with him. They started living in Payyampallil granary. Then they moved to ” Pavothikunnel”( Bhagavathikkunnu) and Palakamannil,- place near the present St.Peter& St.Paul’s Orthodox church.Elder son settled in Pavothikunnel and younger son in Palakamannil. These facilities were given by Poovana Panicker, a traditional Hindu aristocrat of that time.
Branches
Now there are many branches of Pavothikunnel and Palakkamannil families.
Payyampallil, Vattasery, Pavothikunnel and Palakkamannil are the basic branches. The main four family branches and sub- branches are spread around, not only in Mallappally. Some of the Pavothikunnel members moved to Mavelikara.( Chithramezhuth Varghese) Some migrated to Thalavady, Edathua, Vechoochira, Kombazha and other places.
In the following pages, list of major branches will be given.Anyway, we have an ancestory which can be traced back to early centuries of Apostle Thomas and Pakalomattom basic family which is at Kuravilangad. Although, Pavothikunnel -Palakkamannil and Payyampallil, Vattasery main branches have so many sub- branches in different parts of Kerala, we concentrate on Pavothikunnel branch only in this site .We are happy that His Grace Moron Mar Baselios Climis Bishop,is the Patron of our family. Our Family History, written by Valliyakannathil Late Mathew Varghese is available for reference and detailed information. We are proud that our Kudumbayogam meeting started centuries ago, long before many of the families in Kerala started thinking of constituting it . We have our manuscript of minutes of Kudumbayogam held more than 104 years ago. Glad to report that many of the institutions, government offices, major roads and other developments in Mallappally came into existence by the initiative of our forefathers. Ofcourse,we have, a proud family history and legacy to be proud of.But in this modern world, we encourage our younger generation to look forward with a humanitarian and large hearted perceptive, and at the same time not to ignore our great heritage.
It’s for our younger generation worldwide to connect each other and maintain the bond of love.
All best wishes greetings to our consanguinity world wide and we appreciate your comments and suggestions.
About Our Kudumbayogam
Pavothikunnel Kudumbayogam meetings started way back in. the year 1920 (1095 Malayalam Era). Copy of the manuscript minutes given below, from where we learn that Vattasery Thirumeni presided the meeting. Then its function was dormant for few years and then restarted. Now, it’s more than a century that our Kudumbayogam is functioning without break, whereas most families in Kerala can trace only a few years back for their Kudumbayogam history. Details of office bearers,. place of meeting and other details are evident from the minutes. . It’s,of course a great historical document and evidence of our ancestry and noble legacy., about which every family member can be proud of..!!
